Victoria, BC is known as the retirement capital of Canada. We have the nicest weather, with mild winters and early spring blooms. Being in a rain shadow, Victoria gets about half the rain that Vancouver has. Real estate prices are higher than most other parts of the country, but traditionally lower than Vancouver. In recent years, the spread between the average home price in Vancouver and the average home price in Victoria has increased significantly. This has been the result of a surge in Vancouver prices.

Victoria is both a government town and a tourist destination. It is home to CFB Esquimalt. The ferry from the mainland (Twassassen) to Vancouver Island (Swartz Bay) takes approximately one hour and 35 minutes. Victoria is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, which is the 43rd largest island in the world. At over 31,000 square kilometers, Vancouver Island is larger than Sicily, and almost 3 times the area of the big island of Hawai'i.

Approximately 350,000 people live in Greater Victoria. We have the highest percentage of people over the age of 80 of any Canadian city, and the third highest population of people over 65.

If you are thinking of moving to Victoria BC, particularly from another province, note that home purchases here include something called the Property Transfer Tax. We have noted that many Alberta buyers are particularly miffed by this 'extra' purchase cost, and it's important that this doesn't come as a surprise at the last minute!

Victoria is a wonderful place to live. The climate allows for outdoor activities almost year round. It is certainly not unusual to see people playing golf or soccer or other activities in the winter months. This means that people find it easier to stay active and healthier.
